March 1, 2021, Ottawa, Ontario – It is no surprise that healthy shorelines are among the most productive and diverse environments out there. They support a vibrant community of plants and wildlife, filter pollutants and protect against erosion. The Love Your Lake program wants to help give lakes some love by offering the Microgrant Program!
The Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF), in partnership with Watersheds Canada, is thrilled to announce that lake groups who have participated in Love Your Lake are eligible to receive funding. Lake groups can receive up to $500 per group to improve freshwater health. The Love Your Lake Microgrant Program will provide funding for shoreline naturalization projects that positively impact lake health such as shoreline restoration and demonstration sites.
Projects should demonstrate the support and involvement of lake community members taking action towards improving and maintaining shoreline and lake health, such as, community members distributing native plants, helping design garden layouts or planting native plant species along shoreline areas.
“The Microgrant Program will be a wonderful addition to Love Your Lake,” said Heather Murphy, Watersheds Canada’s Love Your Lake Program Manager. “Love Your Lake is a shoreline evaluation program that aims to educate shoreline property owners and lake communities on shoreline and lake health. Individual shoreline property reports recommend voluntary actions for improving lake health for people and wildlife. This Microgrant Program is a nice piece to the puzzle, which will help facilitate action on the ground through financial support, while connecting Canadian communities around environmental freshwater issues.”
To date, the Love Your Lake program has expanded its reach to not only Ontario, but also Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. With the hard work of regional partners and volunteers, the program has successfully evaluated over 40,000 properties across Canada. Findings highlight the importance of the program in changing attitudes and driving local action to protect lake health.
“This program helps connect the dots between awareness, education and personal action,” said Terri-Lee Reid, Freshwater Researcher with CWF. “The real impact of the Love Your Lake program happens when property owners use information gained from their shoreline property report to implement positive changes along their shoreline. Ultimately it results in cleaner lakes and healthier habitat for Canada’s wildlife.”
The Love Your Lake program receives generous foundation support from the Rogers Foundation and the Canadian Wildlife Foundation. This support is crucial in expanding the program across Canada and ensuring local organizations have the support they need to deliver Love Your Lake in their region. The Love Your Lake program is co-ordinated by the Canadian Wildlife Federation and Watersheds Canada.
Applications for the Love Your Lake Microgrant Program can be submitted online at LoveYourLake.ca/Microgrant-Program. The 2021 Love Your Lake Microgrant Program application deadline is April 15, 2021 and successful recipients will receive notification by May 3, 2021. Only one application will be accepted per lake group.
Love Your Lake partners are continuing to encourage shoreline property owners to take personal action on their property to help improve their shorelines. To get your lake involved with Love Your Lake, visit: LoveYourLake.ca/Get-Involved
