Building a Greener Future: Shining a Light on Community Green Audit and Retrofit Projects

June 12, 2024 By Watersheds Leave a Comment

by Nicole Dubé, Freshwater Health Coordinator

Whether you are looking to install new heating units, enhance water efficiency, or upgrade to LED lighting, there are many changes, big or small, that you can make to help protect the environment. Learn about the benefits of green audits and retrofits, how different Ottawa, Ontario area organizations have made a difference in their communities, and how you can start your own project!

Green audits and retrofits represent a pivotal step towards sustainability in both residential and commercial settings. These comprehensive assessments evaluate energy and water usage, identify inefficiencies, and propose tailored solutions to reduce environmental impact and operational costs. By embracing green audits and retrofits, individuals and organizations can not only lower their carbon footprint, but also enhance energy efficiency, comfort, and overall building performance.

Community Spotlight: Trinity United Church’s heat pump project

Trinity United Church has started their journey to eliminate fossil fuels from their church operations. They installed three new heat pumps which are designed to provide 60% of their heating, replacing one gas boiler and reducing carbon emissions by between 30 and 40 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. The church also hosted a community information session to share about their new heat pumps and provide information to homeowners about how they can install heat pumps in their homes.

Community Spotlight: Energy Audit and Retrofit Project

Ascension Anglican Church completed an energy audit and retrofit project. They installed a new water boiler and LED lights to improve the energy efficiency of the church. They aim to be as close to net zero carbon emissions as possible and to be a leader in the community in the greening of buildings.
