Perth, ON – On Friday, local MPP John Jordan celebrated with the team at Watersheds Canada regarding the $52,200 Capital grant they received from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The grant was used to address a community need by working with local partners to re-naturalize the shorelines and protect the health of lakes and rivers across the Cataraqui watershed. This will support efforts to rebuild the organization’s resilience and capacity to return to building healthy vibrant freshwater communities.
“Our government understands the critical link between shoreline management and healthy lakes and rivers,” said John Jordan, MPP for Lanark—Frontenac—Kingston. “Watersheds Canada is an important partner in providing valuable research, feedback, and educational opportunities for waterfront homeowners and associations. Our investment of $52,200 strengthens our continued commitment to making shoreline management a priority in the naturally beautiful riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston.”
The grant funds were used to increase capacity of the fieldwork conducted by Watersheds Canada, including the purchase of new equipment, structures, and technological capacity. These will support land- and water-based transportation needs, and allow for monitoring and documenting project sites and store and develop program content.
“We are thankful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation for their strong support in building the infrastructure and capacity of Watersheds Canada as our organization leads freshwater stewardship projects in the Cataraqui watershed. With this increased capacity, our programs will support more on-the-ground restoration work with a diversity of stakeholder groups to protect their local lakes, rivers, and shorelines,” said Robert Pye, Executive Director of Watersheds Canada.
“Whether it’s helping people learn new things, connect with their community, or simply have fun, organizations like Watershed Canada deliver experiences that make a difference,” said Stan Cho, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. “That’s why grant support through the Ontario Trillium Foundation is so important. This funding will help ensure they remain at the heart of the community for decades to come.”
