Enter to win a beautifully hand-crafted Belted Kingfisher!

July 3, 2024 By Watersheds 46 Comments

Enter a contest to win a beautifully hand-crafted, new decorative Belted Kingfisher carving generously donated to Watersheds Canada by Canadian artist, Mike Reader:

Belted Kingfisher are a common visitor to river and shoreline areas, nesting along banks and hunting almost exclusively on aquatic prey. You may have had the treat of hearing the rattling call of the kingfisher even if you haven’t been able to spot it. Healthy riparian habitat is critical for Belted Kingfisher to thrive as they use riverside branches to perch, rest, and hunt from. Bring home this beautiful carving by entering Watersheds Canada’s new contest! This contest has now ended.

What a Beautiful fun bird. We have one who flies by daily 630-730 loudly calling out. It is rare that he does not catch his breakfast of minnows, small fish.

I love birds, so years ago I bought a book that has 250 different drawings/paintings with the sound of each bird associated with the bird on each page. I often go through the book just to press the button to hear the bird on that page sing or chirp.

We live on the Shores of Lake Huron, where a pair of Kingfishers return every year and make their home in the sandy bank behind the beach. We l9ve to hear their call as they sweep over Bayfield Harbour and the river.

30 August 1950, my father woke us up to show us a kingfisher that had flown down our chimney. He took it to the door and set it free.. then when the fog lifted he climbed in his plane CF-OBH and took off for North Bay. Before noon we heard that a plane was down near Temagami ON. I never saw my father again.
Hoping that whoever wins this carving treasures it and treats our environment with the passion that my father had.
