2025 Wolfe Lake Brush Bundle Project

Watersheds Canada recently delivered a brush bundle project on Wolfe Lake, located in South Frontenac Township and Rideau Lakes Township.

This event brought together the community in one shared purpose: building up native fish habitat. It was done using old Christmas trees that were lashed together and weighed down with a cinder block to sink them to the bottom of the lake. The brush bundles were deployed at specific areas to ensure they were beneficial for fish but not disruptive to boating activities.

The project was delivered in partnership with Wolfe Lake Association, 1st Drummond Scouts, Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, and Camp Iawah. The youth turnout for this event made the project even more impactful as it allowed younger generations to learn about the significance of protecting our native freshwater ecosystems.

Funding for this project was generously provided by Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Outdoor Fund. All Watersheds Canada fish habitat projects are completed with applicable permits and approval by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

In partnership with grassroots organizations and local volunteers, Watersheds Canada has completed many fish habitat restoration projects across Eastern and Central Ontario over the past decade, including walleye spawning bed enhancements, cold-water creek enhancements, lake trout spawning bed enhancements, and in-water habitat enhancements through the deployment of brush piles (woody debris). If you think your Ontario waterfront community could benefit from a fish habitat enhancement project, please check out the free Fish Habitat Enhancement Toolkit: Watersheds.ca/download-the-fish-habitat-enhancement-toolkit/
