Lowbush Blueberry

Vaccinium angustifolium

Lowbush Blueberry is a short deciduous shrub species that grows about 0.5 m in height. The leaves are glossy, alternately arranged, lanceolate shaped, and have finely toothed margins. The leaves have attractive and showy colour changes from reddish green in the spring, to dark green in the summer, to maroon purple in the fall. The flowers are small, white, bell or urn shaped, have pinkish tinges, appear in small clusters, and bloom between May and June. The fruit are blueish purple coloured berries, which are edible for humans. The flowers are beneficial to pollinator species, like bees and butterflies. The berries are also beneficial to wildlife species, like birds and small mammals.

Lowbush Blueberry grows best in normal to moist conditions with full or partial sun exposure. It prefers organically rich, well-drained humus or sand soil types. It is tolerant of light shade, acidity, drought, and dry soils once established. This shrub can be naturally found in bogs, sandy field or meadows, prairies, sandy forests, or sandy upland shorelines.
