Mountain Fly Honeysuckle

Lonicera villosa

The Mountain Fly Honeysuckle is a small native shrub, which grows erect with ascending branches, giving it a sparse, irregular round shape. New growth branches produce fine hairs and a reddish-brown stem. As the branches age, they turn gray in colour and develop a papery texture. This species produces simple, green, oblong-shaped leaves which grow opposite each other on the branches. During the fall, the leaves change to a yellow-brown colour. The Mountain Fly Honeysuckle yields yellow hairy flowers, which grow in pairs on short leaf stalks. This species produces edible blue-black berries, approximately the size of a marble, which ripen between July and August.
