More information about the scale and severity of the issue would be helpful as regards a priorties perspective.
The survey questions are open to large variations in interpretation by particiapnts and will hopefully provide you with the info you are looking for. Direct discharge into watercourses of sump pumps is also an issue that should be discussed.
The urban/ rural split could affect survey results. I would think urban people have the highest concentration of pools and hot tubs and tend to not care where discharges end up as long as they get rid of the product into storm or sanitary drains, but it still ends up in the watercourse eventually.
I like to think rural folks have a much lower concentration of pools and hot tubs, but would hopefully be more aware of where the product is going
I agree that the rural population probably don’t have as many pools, whereas in cities or towns there are lots of pools. The neighbour behind my house of discharges water from his pool in the spring and fall into the sewers and I did wonder if this practice of dumping chlorinated water into the sewers and that then goes into the Bonnechere River is a good idea! Similar to the snow dump behind Deslauriers cabinets next to the Bonnie here river in Renfrew!
We have the toys and need to know how to respectfully use them while considering the environment.
After a days work around the cottages or in the garden we do enjoy our hot tub. We are in the 30m from the waterfront zone.
I have always been aware of chemicals and recrearion used of water but I am unsure of how one could treat it, or if you are a renter how to convince the owner to properly manage theor.pools/hottubs
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I don’t own either and never really thought about the effects they have on the environment.
Happy to share full page information sheets in the newsletter for our Cottagers association.
I was not aware at all of this problem…1st time I’ve ever heard of it…glad to have learned about it so I can help others to know too. I don’t have a pool (l live beside a very swimmable lake) and don’t have a hot tub, but always thought if I did get one, it would be the kind heated by a wood burning stove. Please do send any info on mitigation measures please so I can learn all I can……thank you.
We appreciate your open mind to learn more about the subject, and for filling in the survey to help us with our resource development!
Thanks for the efforts. Its makes a difference. I do recommend Watershed Canada when I encounter people regarding water protection in my circle of influence.
Hi Steve, thank you for the kind words! We appreciate your support in spreading the word and bringing about positive change in your community.
Hi Bart, you are still able to answer the survey as it is about the topic in general and does not cover specific pool/hot tub ownership questions. Thanks!
I have no pool or hot tub
(Why am I seeing an answer from another person – Chris Weinsczyk

The water table is under pressure from many directions. Releasing chemically treated ‘play’ water into our lakes and rivers is a thoughtless act.
Hi Dennis, even if you don’t have a pool or hot tub you are still able to fill in the survey! It is about the education and general awareness around the topic rather than specific ownership questions.
We have no pool or hot tub at our cottage however i am interested in educating and informing our lake association members.
Hi Sue, the survey questions cover the general education and awareness of the topic so you can still fill it in even if you don’t have a pool or hot tub!
Hi Chris, the survey questions are not about you specifically owning a hot tub or pool so you are still welcome to answer it!
Hi Kim, you can fill in the survey even if you don’t have a pool or hot tub yourself as the survey talks about the issue overall!
You will sign-up for our monthly newsletter which gives you free tools and information to protect your freshwater.
Although discharging possible hazardous water into waterways it pales in comparison to all the 2 cylinder boats with visible plums of oil in the water and air.
