$10,000 South Frontenac Lake Ecosystem Grant Helps Watersheds Canada Restore and Protect Local Shorelines

November 10, 2025 By Monica Seidel Leave a Comment

Funding supported the restoration of 500 metres of shoreline and 1,200m² of riparian habitat across South Frontenac, Ontario.

November 10, 2025 — Watersheds Canada received a $10,000 Lake Ecosystem Grant from the Township of South Frontenac to implement The Natural Edge shoreline naturalization program. The funding supported the restoration of 10 waterfront properties across South Frontenac, Ontario, improving local water quality, reducing erosion, and creating vital habitat for fish and wildlife.

Through this project, Watersheds Canada worked directly with 10 waterfront property owners to design and carry out custom shoreline restoration plans. Together, they planted 750 native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, restoring 500 metres of shoreline and 1,200 square metres of riparian habitat. These natural buffers will filter runoff, stabilize soil, provide shade and habitat for aquatic and terrestrial species, and boost climate resilience for local lakes.

Alongside on the ground restoration, Watersheds Canada also engaged with over 5,000 community members through educational outreach, including social media updates, newsletters, and public presentations delivered in partnership with local lake associations. Through this outreach, residents learned about the benefits of naturalized shorelines, native plants, and the role individuals can play in protecting their local freshwater ecosystems.

Since 2013, Watersheds Canada has restored 56 sites in South Frontenac through The Natural Edge program, planting over 5,100 native plants and rehabilitating more than 10,000 square metres of shoreline habitat. This year’s project continued that legacy, ensuring that South Frontenac’s lakes and rivers remain healthy and resilient for generations to come.
