Welcome to our Summer Students!

May 22, 2023 By Monica Seidel Leave a Comment

Thanks to generous funding from Canada Summer Jobs, Watersheds Canada is able to grow our staff team and deliver critical on-the-ground programming this summer! We are excited to welcome back some summer students this year, including Alana, Tanice, and Cole, and welcome new summer students, Ty and Jonathan. Let’s meet the students!

Alana – Education programs administrator

Alana is a student at the University of Guelph majoring in Bio-Medical Science with a minor in Neuroscience. She loves spending time outdoors and is passionate about environmental sustainability. Alana is excited for the opportunity to return to Watersheds Canada again this summer to continue educating Canadians and promoting freshwater stewardship. She enjoys growing plants, camping, hiking, crafting, and sharing laughs with family and friends!

Cole – Garden maintenance student

Cole has rejoined the Watersheds Canada team for a third summer as our Garden maintenance student. He enjoys taking care of the garden, which provides the Natural Edge team with healthy native plants all season long. Cole will be graduating grade 12 in June 2023. In his spare time, Cole enjoys collecting Jim Henson and Muppet memorabilia; editing and creating videos, as well as skidooing and atving at his cottage.

Jonathan – Environmental technician

Jonathan is going into his fourth year at Trent University and is majoring in Water Sciences. He has always had a soft spot for the outdoors, which led to an interest in the conservation/restoration of our environment. Joining the team as their summer student Environmental technician, he is excited to work alongside the Watersheds Canada team to help protect the health of our lakes and rivers. In his free time, you can find Jonathan enjoying a good crossword and kicking it back out in nature.

Tanice – Environmental technician

Tanice was raised in Akwesasne, Ontario. Akwesasne is a reservation between the two borders of Canada and the United States of America. She is Haudenosaunee of Turtle Island. Growing up as a Haudenosaunee and being surrounded by the practices and knowledge from her traditions, has influenced her to have a love for the environment as well as the animals that inhabit it. In her spare time, she loves to garden, watch T.V. and care for her chickens, dogs, and fish.
Following almost a year of working for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) and Watersheds Canada in 2022, she attended the University of Guelph as an undergraduate and went with great intent of graduating with a Bachelor of Indigenous Environmental Science and Practice. Her goal is to gain enough knowledge to make a sustainable difference in her community and many differences on other reservations. After completing her first year she is back working with MCA and Watersheds Canada for the summer!

Ty – Ecological technician

Ty is a passionate outdoorsman with a love of lake and river ecosystems and a fascination with all forms of wildlife. He graduated from the Environmental Science program at the University of Guelph with a specialization in Ecology, and is a current participant in the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s Canadian Conservation Corps program.
Ty supports the delivery of the Love Your Lake program by working to raise landowner awareness of water stewardship principles and environmental issues in local lakes. In his spare time, he likes playing guitar, hiking, canoeing, running, reading, and cooking.

Andres – Freshwater Stewardship Education Intern

Andres is an environmental professional dedicated to championing sustainable practices and making a difference in the world. With his degree in Environmental Sciences graduate from the University of Calgary and experience working and volunteering in sustainability projects in Latin America, Europe, Africa and Canada, he will contribute to Watershed Canada’s mission by utilizing his strong analytical skills and passion for conservation.

He is deeply fascinated with ecosystems’ interconnectedness, particularly in freshwater environments. Andres believes that sustainable stewardship of our water resources is key to a balanced ecosystem and a healthier planet. He is excited to join Watersheds Canada and looks forward to contributing to a future where everyone recognizes their power to protect freshwater. His work will tie to the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals #8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, #13: Climate Action, and #15: Life on Land. He will develop and implement best-management practices, education projects, and resources and tools for individuals and freshwater groups to use to take local action.

Nathaniel – Riparian Habitat Restoration Intern

Nathaniel has long been keen to spend time outside, from working at summer camps to vegetable farming and playing outdoor sports. An appreciation for time spent around freshwater and concern for environmental protection has guided much of his work and education choices.

Nathaniel graduated from Trent University with a Bachelor of Environmental Science/Studies and has been passionate about sustainable agriculture, energy, and conservation issues. These days he often spends his free time biking, paddling, and playing pick-up basketball.
