Flooding and Water Scarcity Resource Toolkit

How Prepared Are We for Floods and Droughts?

Flooding and water scarcity are not new challenges, but they are becoming increasingly severe across Canada. Climate change, rapid urbanization, and the overuse of freshwater have intensified these risks.

In many communities, existing stormwater systems are no longer adequate. When their maximum capacity is reached, these systems can overflow, accelerating flood conditions and increasing the likelihood of damage. Limited funding has forced many municipalities to rely on aging infrastructure rather than investing in necessary upgrades or replacements. As a result, communities face a higher risk of flood-related impacts.

Similar pressures are driving growing concerns around water scarcity. Freshwater overuse, pollution, and climate change-induced droughts have contributed to a significant global decline in available freshwater resources. Even in provinces renowned for their abundance of freshwater, signs of water scarcity are beginning to emerge.

Watersheds Canada is launching a Flooding and Water Scarcity education toolkit aimed at raising awareness and strengthening community preparedness. This page provides access to free resources designed to support decision-making and help you better prepare your community:

  1. Find out if “You Are In A Flood Vulnerable Area” in this blog.
  2. See if “Your Town Is Flood Ready” in this blog.
  3. In this blog, you will learn what happens “When Rivers Run Low“.
  4. Learn about possible in our “Nature-based Solutions to Reduce Flood Risk” blog.
  5. “Make Your Home Resilient” using the information in this blog.
  6. Sign-up for our newsletter to stay up-to-date on freshwater issues.
  7. Donate and ensure more communities have access to toolkits and the knowledge they need to protect their local freshwater.
